Henri
This was the eve of the D-Day invasion, June ’44. Henri Gibert knew he would die on this night before the Allied landings. Waffen-SS soldiers, elements of the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler Division, were hot on his trail, meaning to kill or capture him. He would not be taken alive. Death was preferable to torture by the Gestapo.
His intent was to sacrifice his life so that his young protégé, Sonny, could escape. They had made their way into the enemy positions in order for Sonny to board a plane for England.
Henri watched as the plane struggled through the pea field, bouncing on the uneven terrain. The mists swirled violently around the single-engine plane as if trying to hold it on the ground.
Come on, Henri thought, get out of here. Finally lifting off, the small plane dragged the mist with it, slowly gaining altitude. In the distance he could hear shots being fired. Bullets were ricocheting off the craft’s wings.
The pilot pulled the yoke back sharply, and the plane rose in altitude and slowly disappeared from view. Henri could see the enemy’s tracers follow the plane, but luckily no more bullets found their mark.
Good, Henri thought. I will die knowing that young man will make it.
