Chapter 1 – Occupation 1940

The moon cast a silvery glow over the cobblestone streets of Calais, its light barely penetrating the thick fog that clung to the ground. Simone’s breath came in short gasps as she darted through the narrow alleyways, her heart pounding in her chest. The distant sound of boots striking the uneven stone echoed through the night, a chilling reminder of the danger that pursued her.

She clutched the small, leather-bound notebook to her chest, its contents more valuable than gold.  Her mind raced, calculating her next move. She had to reach the safe house before dawn.

A sudden shout behind her made her blood run cold. The Gestapo was closing in. Simone pushed herself harder, her legs burning with the effort. She rounded a corner and pressed herself against the wall, trying to steady her breathing. The sound of footsteps grew louder, and she knew she had only moments before they found her.

With a silent prayer, she slipped into the shadows, hoping the darkness would conceal her. The footsteps passed by, and she allowed herself a moment of relief. However, she could not afford to rest. The mission was too important.

Simone took a deep breath and continued her flight, determined to outwit her pursuers and deliver the precious information.

Simone’s heart raced as she navigated the labyrinthine streets; each turn a calculated risk. She knew the Gestapo was relentless, but she had one advantage—they did not know the city as she did. She had spent months preparing for this moment, memorizing every alley and hidden passage.
